We are living in exciting times in scientific research where our understanding of reality has been taken to the
edge of our perception, but how does music as an art form address this new insight?
Miguel Crozzoli's SCI Music is an artistic research project that creates new perceptions of reality by finding and crafting synergies
between non-conventional music composition and ground-breaking scientific discoveries.
Project Description:
I was summoned to perform a stage design for a music composition about the stars, most precisely, neutron stars.
The venue: 150  m² rectangular room.
An orchestra of 13 musicians, a jury and part of the audience were placed into a squared space delimited by the quadraphonic sound of four speakers. By trying different materials through the prism of light I found in bubble wrap texture a wide spectrum of patterns that evoked images from the space. Hence, I opted to design and build twenty bubble wrap curtains to create a semi-transparent boundary to contain the scene. I wanted to play with the audience's perceptions of space: the curtains offered two different perspectives of the show depending on if you were seated in the front or behind them. In the side curtains, I projected images of astronomical phenomena, while the background ones offered constellations on LED lights.
